MEXICO DISCOVERY - 2006 MEXICO - GUATEMALA -BELIZE
2 NOVEMBER: Flying from Milan, via Atlanta, we land in Mexico City in the night. 3 NOVEMBER . We visit the main buildings of the centre and we spend almost all the day in the Anthropological Museum (1), then we go to the Zocalo, with the Plaza de la Constitucìon and the biggest flag in the world (2), we have dinner in Plaza Garibaldi cheered up by the music of the mariachis, and a bit of nightlife in pubs and disco.

4 NOVEMBER: We visit the archaelogical site of Teotihuacan (3)(4), then back in Mexico city the Basilica of Guadalupe, Les Tres Scultures, Plaza Garibaldi, then in the evening we take the night bus to Oaxaca.
5 NOVEMBER: We arrive in Oaxaca in the early morning, in the town there is social tension due to the contrast between the local governor and citizens.We have breakfast in a chocolate shop ant then we go to visit the site of Montalban (5). Back in Oaxaca we have lunch and we taste fried grasshopper and the larva of Mezcal... A quick tour in the centre, near the barricades (6), then in the evening we take the night bus again.

6 NOVEMBER: We arrive in the morning to San Cristobal, and after have found a cheap hotel for the night we take a look of the centre and of the outdoor market. Then we go to visit the village of San Juan Chamula (7), that is well-known for the curanderos (that treats the sick with these 5 elements: egg, candel, posh liquor, coca-cola, chicken). Just before the sunset we visit the village of Zinacatan (8).

7 NOVEMBER: We go to see the water-falls of Agua Azul, and we refresh inside, and then the others of Misol Ha (9), later we move to the suggestive site of Palenque (10), that was ruled by the king Pakal.
(9) 8 NOVEMBER: whole day in the bus, we leave San Cristobal, we pass the border with Guatemala and we reach the town of Chichicastenango. 9 NOVEMBER: in the morning we do shopping in the ethnic outdoor market of Chichicastenango, then with the mini-bus (11) we move to Panajachel, on the shore of lake Atitlan (12). With a motor launch we take a trip in the lake, we land the villages of Santiago - where we see the cigar-smoking effigy of Maximom (13) - and San Antonio.

10 NOVEMBER: in the morning we look around in another outdoor market, in Solola (14)(15); then we move and we stop for the lunch (tuna spaghetti) in the community "Centro Manos Amigas / Fundacion Rosalia Feliziani" (16). In the late afternoon we reach Antigua (17)(18), the old capital of Guatemala.

11 NOVEMBER: we wake up before the dawn and we go to the excursion on volcano Pacaja (19), and we see the amazing stream of lava. Then all the day in the mini-bus, and in the night we arrive at El Renate, near lake Peten Itza, and we sleep in a hut.

12 NOVEMBER: we visit the wild site of Tikal (20)(21), hidden in the middle of the jungle, then with the mini-bus we manage to go untill the border with Belize (thanks Walter!), but then we use public transport and we reach Belize city in the evening.

13 NOVEMBER: we take the first motorboat to the isle of Cajo Caulker (22), we find an accomodation, afther which we go with a launch to the coral reef (23), where we do snorkeling, and, underwater we see mantas (24), morays, nurse-sharks and many other fishes. Then we move for the lunch to the isle of San Pedro, and back to Cajo Caulker in the night we have a great sea-food barbeque (thanks Juda!).

14 NOVEMBER: day of transfer, by motorboat and then by bus we go back in Mexico, we rent huts near Tulum, at Cabanas Don Armando (Zazil Kin) (25).
15 NOVEMBER: a relaxing day on the seaside, we just go to see the Maya site, that is the only one coastwise (26), and in the afternoon we play soccer with some mexicans boys on the beach.
16 NOVEMBER: with some guys we go to do snorkeling to Yal-Ku bay, and then to the deep water filled sinkholes of Cenote Dos Ojos (27)(28): swimming in the crystalline water of these caves is a fantastic experience.

17 NOVEMBER: we spend our last day at Playa del Carmen, taking some sun and buying last souvenirs. Then in the night we take a taxi for the airport of Cancùn. 18 NOVEMBER: In the morning my plane takes off destination Atlanta, and after some hours I have the second fly. 19 NOVEMBER: I land on my own country: I have lost 5 kilos, besides my girlfriend (that has just left me), but I can say it has been a great holiday!
